Rosenbaum named public administration fellow

FIU Public Administration Professor Allan Rosenbaum has been named a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA).

Rosenbaum, who serves as the director of the Institute for Public Management and Community Service (IPMCS), will be inducted at NAPA’s annual fall meeting in November.

“It’s always great to be recognized by one’s peers,” Rosenbaum said. “The National Academy of Public Administration is inarguably an organization that suggests the highest level of recognition in the field. Having faculty identified with it is recognition of FIU’s success as an institution.”

Chartered by the U.S. Congress, NAPA is a non-profit coalition of public management and organizational leaders who evaluate, analyze and make recommendations on the country’s most critical public management, governance, policy and operational challenges. NAPA fellows help guide the organization by contributing insight and experience to the oversight of the academy’s projects and overall positions on key issues. Fellows are elected annually by the entire membership.

“FIU’s public administration faculty produce the academic and training activities that current and future generations will use to lead our governments,” said John Stack, executive director of the School of International and Public Affairs and associate dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. “Dr. Rosenbaum’s commitment to this field is immeasurable and we’re glad his efforts are so graciously recognized by his peers.”

Rosenbaum came to FIU in 1988 as part of an effort to help elevate the university’s research focus. In 1994, he was appointed director of the IPMCS. It has designed and implemented numerous international government reform projects to encourage the transition to democracy.

In March 2012, Rosenbaum was named vice president of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) and will assume presidency in 2014, a position previously held by Department of Public Administration Chairwoman Meredith Newman. He is also an active member of the steering committee for Memos to National Leaders, a project that prepares memoranda on policy and management challenges and recommending solutions for presidential and congressional personnel.

A seasoned veteran in his field, Rosenbaum has been engaged in international public administration, democratic development, consulting and research on the local, state and national levels. He has also served on the executive committee and international committee of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration.

A Miami native, Rosenbaum earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Miami. He also received master’s degrees in higher education administration from Southern Illinois University and in public administration and political science from the University of California, Berkley. In 1976, Rosenbaum earned a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Chicago.
