5 things to know for Monday

Things to Know is your weekly guide to keep you informed and in the know. Just read it and go!

Welcome back, Panthers! Classes start bright and early on Monday, Jan. 7 (but you already knew that).

bball1. Slam dunk for faculty and staff
Men’s basketball takes on Bethune-Cookman at the U.S. Century Bank Arena on Monday, Jan. 7, at 1 p.m. for faculty/staff appreciation day. All FIU faculty and staff get in free with their FIU I.D.; come early for a free pizza lunch before cheering on your Panthers!

2. A cat cast in bronze
You may have seen some sneak peeks online, but everything is better in person. Head over to the U.S. Century Bank Arena on Thursday, Jan. 10, at 1:30 p.m. to catch the unveiling of the new bronze panther statue at MMC. Rawr!

3. Donate your old cell phone, save the gorillas.
Gorillas are losing their habitats due to illegal mining of materials found in electronic capacitors, such as those in cell phones. Students are collecting used cell phones so the capacitors can be reused. Bring your old phones to OE 246 or OE 167 (MMC) starting Jan. 7.

4. Get involved
Looking for a new cause or extracurricular to join? Check out the Spring Volunteer Fairs at BBC (WUC Panther Square) on Thursday, Jan. 10, or MMC (GC Pit) on Tuesday, Jan. 29. Fairs start at 11 a.m.

5. Game on
Spring intramural sports registration opens on Jan. 7. Register as a team or sign up as a free agent. See the full listing of spring sports and league dates on the Recreation Services website.
