A Washington internship changed the career path of College of Business student Jorge Narey Fernandez.

With two Miami internships under his belt, he was encouraged by the college’s Career Management Services office to apply for an opportunity offered by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU). The application process was lengthy, but worthwhile: Jorge was selected for an internship in the U.S. Census Bureau. He worked for the Office of Economic Planning and Innovation where he helped prepare and promote the 2012 Economic Census.

The Washington position gave Fernandez a look at the world of work beyond Miami. Networking opportunities, meetings with top legislators and an insight into the federal government were all life-changing experiences.

“HACU is an incredible organization,” Fernandez said. “I had never lived away from home before. They gave me the best opportunity of my life.”

After his graduation in the summer of 2012, Jorge stepped up a national job search. He took a position with the National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA), working to encourage companies to partner with the organization on recruiting and diversity outreach efforts.

The internship gave him the impetus to look for more permanent employment outside Miami.

“There are great opportunities in places like Houston, Dallas and Minnesota that haven’t been as affected by the economy as Miami,” he said. “You just have to do your homework and look hard for the opportunities.”

This story is part of an occasional series that looks to highlight the benefits students derive from doing internships. FIU students are encouraged to seek out internships by working with FIU Career Services, professors and mentors who can assist in identifying these opportunities. Read more internship profiles.
