Meet FIU’s Dean of Students

Recently, the university took a big step in nurturing a culture of care at FIU by appointing Associate Vice President of Student Affairs Cathy Akens to the additional position of dean of students. In this newly created role, Akens chairs FIU’s Behavioral Intervention team and works with students and their families when they are in distress. When problems arise, Akens can provide referral to campus resources, as well as promote initiatives that address students’ needs and interests.

Akens has been at the university for 19 years and has held various roles in Housing and Residential Life.
