1 Billion Rising coming to FIU Feb. 14

On Thursday, Feb. 14, members of the university community — on campus and beyond — will be rising, talking, engaging, protesting and dancing as they join 1 Billion Rising, a global movement to end violence against women and girls. FIU will be hosting a free street fair at Modesto A. Maidique Campus as part of the worldwide initiative.

1 Billion RisingStop by the street fair between MMC’s Gold and Blue Garages between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to check out live performances, information and activity booths and pocket some free giveaways. Miami Northwestern’s High School band, dance and drama teams, Belly Motions Bollywood, Afro Diaries, Bollywood Fusion Fitness, FIU’s The Vagina Monologues, DJ Christofino, DJ Rhoto and more will be there.

Later in the evening, everyone is invited to join the movement from 7 to 9 p.m. at New World Symphony’s Soundscape Park in Miami Beach where you can dance to music by DJ Le Spam in another free event.

The name of the movement, 1 Billion Rising, is a reference to the number of women the United Nations estimates will be raped or assaulted in their lifetime. It is happening in conjunction with V-Day, another global movement begun by Vagina Monologues author Eve Ensler. In celebration of its 15th anniversary, V-Day organizers created 1 Billion Rising, an ambitious campaign designed to bring awareness to violence against women and girls. More than 200 countries are expected to participate in 1 Billion Rising.

FIU’s Student Programming Council, Women’s Studies Center and School of Integrated Science and Humanity are among the organizers and sponsors of the Miami events.
