1.   Winning writing
Get those typing fingers ready to write and win! The Creative Writing Program is accepting poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction entries to its annual Student Literary Awards; the deadline is Wednesday, Feb. 13.  The Common Reading essay contest, open to all first-year students, closes Friday, Feb. 15.

2. Safety is sexy
University Health Services presents its annual Sex Carnival, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Come out to the GC Pit on Monday, Feb. 11, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to find out how to stay safe and to enjoy games, giveaways and free food.

3. Crisis close to home
It’s been one year since the untimely death of Trayvon Martin, and African-American males still face a litany of risks and dangers. Guest lecturer Pedro Noguera of New York University comes to the MARC Pavilion (MMC) on Thursday, Feb. 14, at 4 p.m. to discuss the intersection between race, class and gender.

4. Row, row, row your boat
BBC Recreation’s spring kayak trips begin Friday, Feb. 15, with an after-dark excursion. Check out the full schedule of daytime and nighttime trips and find out how to join in.

5.  Who’s the greenest of them all?
Recyclemania is underway this February and March! More than 600 universities participate in this national competition. Help FIU nab the top spot in Florida – recycle using the blue bins around campus! Find out more at Gogreen.fiu.edu.
