FIU Health and Univision Radio partner to produce weekly Spanish-language radio show

The FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and Univision Radio have joined forces to launch a weekly Spanish-language radio program to address timely and important health issues.

“A Tu Salud” airs Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. on Univision América Miami 1140 AM. The half-hour program features HWCOM doctors and other FIU experts discussing relevant medical topics in a talk show format hosted by Emmy-Award winning broadcast journalist Ileana Varela. Topics so far have included vaccines for adults, preparing for a healthier pregnancy, and tips for traveling to countries affected by cholera.

“As South Florida’s first public medical school we feel that our mission is not just to educate medical students, but our entire community, and our partners at Univision are giving us a perfect opportunity to help educate and make an impact outside our campus,” said Dr. John Rock, founding dean of the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and senior vice president for Health Affairs at FIU.

Claudia Puig, a member of the FIU Board of Trustees and senior vice president and regional general manager at Univision Radio, said that this partnership fulfills both organizations’ mission to inform the Spanish-speaking community. Univision Radio is the largest Spanish-language radio network in the nation.

“We are excited to be able to share the knowledge and expertise of such a prestigious group of health professionals with our listeners,” said Claudia Puig, who was instrumental in creating the partnership. “We’re honored to have the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine as an ally in our mission to inform entertain and empower our community.”

Varela, a veteran South Florida broadcast journalist who has more than 25 years experience covering Miami, is the associate director for marketing and public relations for FIU’s Academic Health Center. For questions, please call Varela at 305-348-4926 or email ilvarela@fiu.edu.
