President’s budget update

The following message was sent from President Mark B. Rosenberg to the university community on February 5, 2013:

Dear members of the university community,

I am pleased to share with you some encouraging news regarding next year’s budget.

MBR-headshot-266x40012Gov. Rick Scott’s proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year aims to restore the $300 million that was cut from last year’s funding and add an additional $95 million to overall appropriations, resulting in a total investment of $3.85 billion in Florida’s universities. As you may know, the Florida Legislature last year cut university funding by $300 million as a temporary measure to balance the budget. While Gov. Scott’s proposed budget is not the final State University System budget, since the Legislature has not begun deliberating, his is indeed a step in the right direction.

We appreciate that Gov. Scott has recognized the value that our universities bring to our state and has chosen to support us as we go about the business of educating our citizens and generating economic growth. The governor clearly understands that we get it!

Specifically, the governor proposes to use $118 million of the restored $300 million for university operational expenses and another $182 million for performance funding.

I want to reiterate that this is merely a recommendation and not the final legislative budget. Over the next few months, we are sure to see several iterations.

The legislative sessions begins March 5, 2013. I urge you to stay informed and active as this process develops.

Sincerely yours,
