SEAS launches ‘Our Common Future’ lecture series

The School of Environment, Arts and Society (SEAS) will inaugurate the “Our Common Future” lecture series with a talk, “The Arctic in Global Perspectives: Why are changes in the Artic important for South Florida and the rest of the world?,” by Robert W. Corell Thursday, March 28.

Robert W. Corell

The event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Graham Center West Ballroom on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus. It is free and open to the public.

Corell is a global climate scientist and Senior Faculty Fellow in SEAS. He also served as a Professor at the University of Tromso in Norway and a Principal in the Global Environment and Technology Foundation. Corell will talk about the consequences of interactions between regions of the Northern hemisphere and the Arctic on climate change, ecosystems, human health, and economic and resource development. He will also address the potential impact of these interactions on the eight Arctic countries, as well as much of Europe, North America and the rest of the planet.

“Dr. Corell was a natural choice for kicking off the series because he has been at the forefront of the science, policy, and public communication of climate change on an international scale. As a Senior Fellow in the school, he will be able to discuss the international issues around climate change and how they matter to us here in South Florida,” said Mike Heithaus, executive director of SEAS. “The Our Common Future lecture series will bring some of the world’s leading thinkers to FIU to discuss critical environmental issues that will affect our communities on a local, regional and global scale. It offers not only a chance for us to hear the thoughts of the speaker but to interact with them – especially our students.”

To close out the “Our Common Future” series, Corell will meet with graduate students during a private luncheon and discussion the following day.
