Shortstop Edwin Rios named Player of the Week


Freshman shortstop Edwin Rios was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week after hitting more than .500 last week.

Rios had a strong week at the plate going 9 for 17 (.529) with three home runs and six RBI. He was 4 for 5 with a solo home run against South Alabama on Saturday as he sparked an FIU rally that fell just short in a 6-5 loss. On Sunday in the Panthers’ 7-4 win over the Jaguars, Rios was 2 for 3 with another home run and an RBI double.

On the season, Rios leads the team in hitting (.358), slugging percentage (.633), on-base percentage (.455), OPS (.1088) and home runs (6) and is tied with Josh Anderson for the team lead in RBI (29) and doubles (15).

FIU returns to the diamond this weekend, Apr. 12-14, for a three-game home series against ULM. The Panthers and the Warhawks meet Friday at 6 p.m. from the FIU Baseball Stadium. Saturday’s game begins at 4 p.m. and Sunday’s series finale is at 1 p.m.
