FIU is the first public university in Florida to offer in-state tuition to students who have qualified for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Before this decision was made this spring, local undocumented students had to pay out-of-state tuition. In-state tuition is approximately one-third the price of out-of-state tuition.
“This is an excellent opportunity for students who have lived their entire lives here in South Florida,” said Vice President for Enrollment Services Luisa Havens. “The most important step is to apply for deferred action.”
To qualify, students must have graduated from a Florida high school or have attended college in Florida for at least 12 consecutive months. Currently, some 30 FIU students have benefited from the tuition waiver that allows them to pay in-state tuition.

The story was featured in the June 10 issue of the Sun Sentinel.
So when will legal citizens from other states get the same benefits than the illegals?
Joe, I can respect your perspective… but as far as this specific story, FIU is simply affording in-state tuition to individuals who have lived in Florida. Education shouldn’t be politicized to this end… all citizens of the WORLD should be afforded the opportunity to learn.
“same benefits AS…” Nevertheless, other legal citizens from other states DO get the same benefit after 1 year of residence… No preferential treatment being given. Please note these students have already qualified for federal status as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). This has nothing to do with legal/illegal status. In fact, they are held to a higher rule, as a US citizen from another state having lived here for a year need not have graduated from a local high school.
This is awesome! FIU leading the way in providing fair access to education! Way to get right, FIU!
Americans should come first……….
FIU should not be supporting illegal immigration which is what this act amounts to.
RIGHT ON RICHARD !!!
As a proud panther, I was so happy to hear the news. While I do understand your perspective Joe, please understand that in-state tuition will be afforded to those students who have lived and graduated from high schools in the state of Florida meeting all of the requirements for in-state tuition. Thank you FIU for setting the path that I hope many others will follow! I am truly proud to be a Panther; BLUE AND GOLD ALWAYS! Just found another reason as part of my long list of reasons why I love this school!
I know this doesn’t apply to you now but this is pretty cool!
FIU is paving the way to ruin America.
I am very disappointed in Mark Rosenberg’s tenure as president. We miss you Modesto.
