FIU students are invited to join Hispanic Scholarship Fund CEO Fidel A. Vargas and Florida Congressman Joe Garcia (D-26) in a Google “Hangout” Thursday, Oct. 3, at 2 p.m. The 30-minute event will focus on the pursuit of higher education for Latinos across the country and the importance of Latino leadership in the private and public sectors.

Google+ Hangouts is a free video chat service from Google that enables one-on-one chats and group chats with up to 10 people at a time.

In other news, Garcia spoke Sept. 20 before Congress to honor Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) and FIU during HSI Week. Garcia, whose district includes FIU’s Modesto A. Madique Campus, acknowledged the role that FIU and other HSIs play in educating the nation’s future leaders. FIU is a “majority-minority” institution that serves more than 52,000 students, 60 percent of whom are Hispanic. FIU is one of only two HSI research universities.
