U.S. Representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart joined hundreds of FIU students on Friday at a rally in support of human rights and democracy in Venezuela.
Over the past few weeks Venezuelan students have taken to the streets in major cities through the country to denounce the Nicolas Maduro government. At FIU, thought to be home to the largest number of Venezuelan students outside of Venezuela, students of multiple nationalities came together to express their support for the protesters in Venezuela and their repudiation of the Maduro government’s violations of human rights.
Ros-Lethtinen spoke about efforts in Congress to impose sanctions on the Venezuelan government and called on other Latin American nations to do the same. Diaz-Balart encouraged students to help spread the word about what is going on in Venezuela and condemned “the silence” coming from the Obama administration.
“FIU will stand for democracy everywhere,” said FIU President Mark. B. Rosenberg to the students gathered by the fountain at the Modesto. A. Maidique Campus.
