The following message was sent to the university community on April 24, 2014:

Dear members of the university community:

Starting this Sunday we will celebrate our student achievements during our spring commencement ceremonies! In eight ceremonies, thousands of students, their families and friends will gather for this significant occasion that will increase traffic on the west side of the Modesto A. Maidique Campus.

The periods of high traffic will take place around the FIU Arena beginning one hour before each ceremony and one hour after each ceremony. Please note that the segment of Southwest 113th Avenue that runs in front of the arena will be open to local traffic only.

There will be two ceremonies on Sunday, April 27, 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. On Monday, April 28, ceremonies start at 10 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. On Tuesday, April 29, ceremonies start at 10 a.m. 3 p.m. and 7:30p.m. Each ceremony typically lasts about an hour and a half. For a full schedule of commencement ceremonies, please click here.

Commencement guests will be directed to park in Panther Garage, Lot 8 and Lot 9. Lot 10, located directly behind the arena, will be closed for event staff.

After the conclusion of each ceremony, FIU police will alter traffic patterns in the area:

  • Vehicles will not be allowed to enter at the main entrance at Southwest 112th Avenue. Only exiting will be allowed.
  • Vehicles will still be allowed to enter at Southwest 109th Avenue by the Red Garage and PG5; however, only left turns will be allowed at University Drive.

Regular traffic patterns will resume after the bulk of commencement guests have left campus.

Medical students, whose ceremony will take place on Monday morning, will also have that day the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine’s Convocation at the Wertheim Performing Arts Center (WPAC) at 2 p.m. Please plan for increased traffic by the WPAC an hour before and after the convocation.
