On Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners is scheduled to consider the FIU proposal for expanding into land adjacent to the Modesto A. Maidique Campus, currently occupied by the Miami-Dade Fair & Exposition.

The commission will also decide whether FIU’s bid to expand should be put on the general election ballot on Nov. 4, 2014.

It is expected that President Mark B. Rosenberg will make the following key points at the commission meeting about the impact of the Expand FIU initiative:

  • FIU’s increased capacity will provide a world class college education to a greater number of young men and women in our community.
  • An initial economic impact of $1.8 billion and an additional annual recurring economic impact of $541 million to our community is projected, above the $8.9 billion FIU already provides.
  • Jobs created to support FIU’s expanding student population.
  • No cost to Miami-Dade County or students: FIU will finance the expansion without affecting tuition.
