To celebrate the university’s 50th anniversary, FIU News is sharing 50 moments in FIU’s history as part of our “50@50″ series. On the heels of President Barack Obama’s visit to FIU for a town hall on immigration, we take a look back at the first time a sitting president addressed the FIU community and put the university on the map.

On April 27, 1992, President George H.W. Bush delivered the commencement address to FIU graduates at the Miami Beach Convention Center, highlighting FIU as one of the 50 largest universities in the country at the time and as a driving force for growth in the South Florida community.
“I can tell you this: They won’t be asking ‘F-I-Who?’ anymore. Never again,” Bush declared. “The progress that you’ve made stands as testimony to the power of a dream and also of your determination to make that dream real.”

[…] 50@50: President George H.W. Bush speaks to graduates at FIU […]
Wonderful memory as I was conferred with my Master of Public Administration degree on that day, and shook the hand of today’s FIU President Mark Rosenberg, who was Dean in 1992. Couldn’t agree more with Former President Bush that FIU has helped to shape South Florida. My career in international higher education definitely speaks to his statement, “higher education should be an extension of our everyday world around us.” I hope President Obama’s presentation on immigration will be captured live on the web or on U-tube so that those of us that cannot attend can be a part of this special event for our alma mater. Happy Anniversary, FIU!

“It’s not F. I. WHO anymore” Great memories of that day.
