Pedro "Joe" Greer, Jr. , M.D.

Pedro “Joe” Greer Jr., M.D., has been named chair of the newly created Department of Medicine, Family Medicine and Community Health at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM).

Greer, the founding chair of the Department of Humanities, Health and Society had also been serving as interim chair of the Department of Medicine; now both departments have merged into one as part of the College of Medicine’s restructuring.

This new department is the second integrated clinical department at the HWCOM. Last year, the departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery were combined to form the Department of Neuroscience.

“This restructuring will provide greater efficiencies and academic synergy for the College of Medicine,” said John A. Rock, M.D., founding dean and senior vice president for health affairs.

Greer, recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his lifelong work and advocacy on behalf of the homeless and underprivileged, will  continue to serve as associate dean for Community Engagement and continue to promote the college’s social mission to facilitate medical student training while improving the health of the South Florida community.
