Joan Peven Smith says FIU is her adopted university and she has watched with awe as it has grown. Director Emeritus of the FIU Foundation Board of Directors, Smith recalls in the audio clip above her first visit to campus, and the unconventional way she familiarized herself with the university for which she would become a dedicated advocate.

Smith and her husband Harry B. Smith founded the Joan and Harry Smith Annual Lecture Series at the College of Education and the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. The lecture series focuses on preventive medicine.

In 2014, she was awarded the FIU Medallion–Cal Kovens Distinguished Community Service Award.
