Cheryl Brewster, assistant dean for diversity at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, has been elected as the Southern region representative for the group on diversity and inclusion of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).

“As a relatively young medical school this puts us on the national stage and allows HWCOM to take a leadership role in deciding the direction medical schools and academic health centers should take regarding their D&I [diversity and inclusion] programs and initiatives”, said Brewster.

The AAMC is a non-profit organization that serves all of the accredited medical schools in the United States and Canada, and nearly 400 teaching hospitals and health systems— representing 148,000 faculty members, 83,000 medical students and 115,000 resident physicians.

According to the AAMC, its group on diversity and inclusion “serves as a national forum and recognized resource to support the efforts of AAMC-member institutions and academic medicine at the local, regional and national levels to realize the benefits of diversity and inclusion in medicine and biomedical sciences.”
