“Not only have I gotten to meet, and build relationships with the people that run our government, but I have crafted a set of skills that can serve me in any future endeavor,” said Christofer Horta, FIU alumnus and current legislative intern for Congresswoman Frederica Wilson. “My D.C. internship experience was a life changing opportunity that continues to open doors, even after graduation. I would encourage anybody and everybody to pursue coming to the nation’s capital and spend a summer or semester interning.”

The FIU D.C. summer internship experience includes activities such as mentorship matchmaking, advocacy workshops, visits to federal agencies, student/alumni networking receptions, and D.C. Panther family fun events around The District. This year, the FIU in D.C. team will continue its partnership with the 2,000-member strong FIU D.C. alumni chapter as well as the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI).

“Participating in value-added experiences is essential to students acclimating to the city of Washington, D.C. and in turn finding true success to be set up for post-graduation employment,” said Ethan Starkey, FIU/CHLI Internship & Career Success Manager.

As part of the efforts to bolster student activism and employment in D.C., FIU Governmental Relations has brought Starkey on board to connect students and recent alumni to jobs and internship opportunities in Washington, D.C. These groups can expect greater access to and knowledge of opportunities within the federal government, local agencies, corporate offices, and NGOs around the city as a result.

Students can help to extend the reach of FIU’s Worlds Ahead problem-solving and solutions strategies as the change-makers of tomorrow through direct immersion in the nation’s capital alongside thought leaders and entrepreneurs. The larger a network FIU establishes in D.C., the louder its voice becomes in the national conversation on federal priorities central to the university’s mission and vision for the future of its students and the community.
