LATEST UPDATE (OCT. 7 at 9 a.m.) here
The National Hurricane Center has issued a tropical storm watch for Miami-Dade and parts of Monroe counties. This means that we can expect deteriorating weather conditions due to Hurricane Matthew, including strong winds and heavy rains, over the next 48 hours. Broward County is under a hurricane watch, which means that the impact is expected to be greater in Broward.
We have this evening and part of Wednesday to finish personal and work preparations, and secure any supplies needed to weather the storm.
At this time, all university operations are normal. Please ensure that all departments continue to function normally. Decisions regarding class cancellations and campus closures will be made on Wednesday.
Faculty and staff need to work directly with their supervisors to arrange any necessary time off needed to prepare, using appropriate leave. Employees who live north of Miami-Dade are urged to take care of family and personal preparations. The safety of the university community is our priority.
Please continue to monitor local media and pay attention to updates from the National Hurricane Center. Updates regarding university operations will continue to be made available on the university’s news page, FIU News, social media outlets and on 305-348-HELP.
Hurricane preparation may be a new experience for many members of our university community. For tips on what to do, please visit the FIU Department of Emergency Management website or Miami-Dade County’s Hurricane guide.
FIU employees should consult with supervisors about any campus preparations that need to be made, including securing supplies needed to prepare labs and offices, and secure equipment. As a precaution in case we lose power, please back up all of your data. You may use either CrashPlan, an online cloud storage solution or Microsoft OneDrive for Business from Office365.
Please make good use of this time to prepare and take responsibility for your own safety.

Better use that appropriate leave because we really care about your safety.
FIU says safety of the FIU community is its number priority, but it has not canceled classes, leaving students and staff virtually no time to escape Mathew if it hits. Very poor judgement.
Former FIU professor
Very much agreed!
Miami Dade county schools will be closed Thursday and Friday, as will be Broward, Palm Beach and all neighboring counties. FIU need to make its community of students and faculty a priority and announce closures so that we can plan accordingly,
How have night time classes not been canceled tonight? I have class at Biscayne campus from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. tonight, and I think it’s very dangerous that I will be driving home alone at 9 p.m. This is absurd.
Seriously I live in broward, This last minute update is making it really difficult to finish preparing our home. Mind you if the weather is that bad I wouldn’t risk making the drive on my own anyways! Please update soon
