2017 summer camps available at FIU


School’s out for summer! Almost. That means kids (and their parents) are getting ready to dive into summer fun and find the perfect summer camp. FIU is your destination.

From theatre camps to environmental science camps, you’re sure to find an enjoyable and educational camp for your child.

FIU Theatre Summer Camp @ MMC
This year, FIU Theatre will host its first summer camp. The camp is designed to help children develop valuable social skills, boost their confidence and explore their creative side, all while having fun.

In the mornings, campers will participate in theatre classes focused on storytelling, voice, movement, music and improvisation. In the afternoons, they’ll put all of the elements together to create, rehearse and perform their original, self-written play, which they will present to family and friends on the final day of the camp.

The camp is open to children ages 6 – 12. No previous acting or theatre experience necessary. It runs Monday, June 12, through Friday, June 16, at FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus (MMC) from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. The fee is $150 for the week, along with a $15 registration fee. Aftercare is available from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. for an additional $40. The fee includes snacks, water and all materials. Campers are responsible for their own lunch.

FIU Arts, Sciences & Education (CASE) Summer Camp @ MMC

Youth ages 4 – 13 are invited to explore, create and innovate at the inaugural CASE Summer Camp, organized by The College of Arts, Sciences & Education.

In collaboration with the Department of Earth and Environment and Geosciences, this eight-week summer camp combines a unique STEM experience in environmental science and geosciences with fun adventures, sports, games and field trips. FIU campus tours, arts and craft, competitive gaming tournaments and educational learning experiences are just some of this camp’s activities.

The camp will run from June 12 – August 4, from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Before and after care is available from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. and from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Supervised camp activities will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Camp will not run on Tuesday, July 4th.

The fee for the eight-week camp is $1,400; the fee for four weeks is $750; and the weekly fee is $210. There is a non-refundable registration fee of $100. Meals and activities are included.

Parent/Child Bridge Engineering Summer Camp

Students going into third through sixth grade, along with one parent, will have the opportunity to take part in a three-day bridge engineering camp.

Participants will learn about the different types of bridges and how they carry forces; what materials can help accelerate construction of bridges; and 3D printing and how it will impact the future of bridge engineering. Students will take multiple field trips, including visits to local bridges. They will also be part of hands-on activities, including a balsa wood bridge project, 3D printing of small-scale bridges and flexible foam bridges.

The camp will take place June 19- June 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., across various locations, including the Engineering Center. Modesto Maidique Campus and Miami Beach Urban Studios. Register for free!

Center for Children and Families @ MMC

Summer Treatment Program
Beginning June 19, the Center for Children and Families will host its nationally acclaimed Summer Treatment Program, open to children ages 5-12 who have been diagnosed with ADHD or who have emotional, behavioral or learning challenges.

The program has successfully helped more than 2,500 children and families and is composed of evidence-based intensive treatments incorporated into an eight-week therapeutic summer camp setting. Group and tailored individual treatment plans are focused on improving problem-solving, academic functioning and social skills—while also incorporating recreational, age-appropriate games and group activities.

Parents take an active role in their children’s treatment by participating in weekly parent-training sessions, where they develop the skills needed to change their child’s behavior at home and assist in their progress.

This comprehensive school readiness program is for children entering kindergarten with behavior problems. The Summer Program for Autism in Rising Kindergartners

FIU EcoAcademy @ BBC

Hosted by the School of Environment, Arts and Society, the EcoAcademy features marine science activities, swimming, kayaking, and arts and crafts for youth 6-14 years old. Now in it’s 9th year, the camp is held on FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC) in North Miami. Each week of the camp is thematically driven to include a range of activities from ecosystem exploration to learning about creatures of the sea.

The camp runs from July 10 – August 4, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The camp costs $235 per week. Before and After care are available for an additional $25 per week.

Miami PREP Summer STEM Program @ Engineering Center
The Miami Pre-College Enrichment and Preparation (PREP) Summer Program is a five-week summer Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program to serve elementary, middle and high school students of South Florida. It is a STEM-focused academic enrichment and recreational program for students aspiring and preparing to attend college.

Integrating academic, physical and social activities into every aspect of the program, Miami PREP is designed for students currently in the 3rd – 10th grades (rising 4th – 11th graders). Talented and motivated students will find this a one-of-a-kind experience that is challenging, fun and rewarding.

The program runs from June 26 – July 28. The program costs $800 for the five weeks. Limited scholarships are available. Registration must be submitted by May 29.

Animation Gets Real Miami @ Engineering Center
The Animation Gets Real 2017 VSA Florida Summer Camp invites youth 13-22 with autism and related disabilities to come explore the world of animation and filmmaking. Students will learn real-life skills, including animation, writing, editing, storyboarding and music-making. The program is appropriate for students who are able to follow instructions, independently communicate and participate in a group setting.

The program will be held July 24 – July 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the FIU College of Engineering & Computing at 10555 W. Flagler Street, Miami, FL, 33174. Space is limited to 30 participants.

Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Priority is given to Miami-Dade County residents. All registration forms must be received by Monday, June 26, for priority consideration. To register, applicants must complete the online registration form by the deadline date and submit payment in full for each student participating in the program.

The program  is $65 for Miami-Dade residents and $365 for non-residents

Animation Gets Real is presented by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs All Kids Included Initiative in partnership with VSA Florida and the FIU College of Engineering & Computing.

Miami Waves Club Summer Camp @ BBC
The Miami Waves Club offers boys and girls the opportunity to learn about different sports in a friendly environment during the summer. The camp is hosted at BBC. A few activities the campers will participate in include acting, swimming, kayaking, arts and craft, dancing, gardening, gymnastics, soccer, synchronized swimming, water sports as well as field trips.

Before and after care is available for drop off as early as 7 a.m. and pick up until 7 p.m. for an additional cost. For more information about the summer camp, visit their website.

Sports Summer Camps @ MMC

Men’s Soccer
At Florida International Soccer Camps, players will receive a professional soccer experience directed by the FIU Men’s soccer staff alongside an elite group of collegiate coaches. The camp will take place at MMC.

The Elite Residential Camp runs from July 13-17 and is open to boys ages 14-19. The camp is staffed with top level coaches. It will feature college coaches from various programs and divisions of the college game. The camp includes a “recruiting seminar,” which will help aspiring players understand the college recruiting process as well as the demands of being a college athlete.

This camp costs $515 for students who will be residents during the program and $445 for students who will commute during the camp. For more information about this camp, click here.

Baseball
Mervyl Melendez Youth Baseball Camp offers a hands-on youth baseball camp experience that concentrates on the fundamental skills young players will need in order to progress throughout their baseball careers.

Three week-long camps will be held at MMC on the following days: Jun 12-16; June 19-23; June 26-30. The camp day runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. One week-long camp costs $200.

Softball
The objective of Gator Rebhan Softball Camps is to create an environment to develop softball skills and fundamentals, while providing an opportunity to showcase players’ talent in a competitive environment.

The Next Level Summer Elite Camp will be held June 19-21 and will be open for 6th – 11th graders. The camp costs $250. Each camper must bring her own softball equipment. Players should bring a glove, bat, cleats/spikes, running shoes or turf shoes, hat/visor and any other equipment they feel necessary to compete.

Campers will have the opportunity to meet and learn from current FIU players, FIU Softball coaching staff and possible DI and Junior College Coaches. They will also receive a camp t-shirt.

Football
Butch Davis Football Camps are open to anyone entering grades 9th-12th grade as of fall 2017 as well as current junior college freshmen and sophomores. Various camp options are offered: From one-day camps and a specialists camp to a 7-on-7 tournament and a camp geared toward offensive and defensive linemen (OL/DL camp).

The one-day camps, specialists camp, and the OL/DL camp cost $25 each camp. The 7-on-7 tournament costs $25 per camper with a maximum of 20 players per team.

Men’s Basketball
FIU Head Basketball Coach Anthony Evans will be hosting his fifth annual team camp, June 9-11, at FIU Arena at MMC. The camp is open to any and all high school basketball programs.

The team camp will include high-level competition, teams from the state of Florida, certified officials, a five-game guarantee and a camp T-shirt. The top teams at the camp will advance to the playoffs with the winner receiving a championship trophy. All games will follow Florida High School rules. The cost of the team camp is $500 per squad. A $250 deposit for the camp is due by June 2 to guarantee a spot.

Indoor & Beach Volleyball
The Rita Crockett Summer Volleyball Camps and Clinics offer girls from kindergarten through high school the opportunity to spend part of their summer learning the game of volleyball. Nine camps and clinics will be held during June and July. All camps will be held on Lime Court at FIU Arena and at the FIU Sand Volleyball Complex.

The Beach Camp will be held from June 5 -7 at the FIU Arena and Sand Complex. This camp is open to youth ages 11-18. Newcomers will have the opportunity to learn the basics of the game and polish they’re skills as they learn. Experienced players will be able to fine-tune all of their skills. All campers will learn drills to expand their game with the direction of NCAA Coach of the Year Rita Crockett and her staff. Campers will get attention on all-around skills, specialized skills, game strategy, team dynamics as well as strength and conditioning.

Indoor camps include a youth day camp for participants ages 6-12 as well as individual skills camps, team camps and advanced specialty clinics for participants ages 12-18.

The youth day camp will help them learn the game through age-appropriate skills and techniques, sportsmanship and teamwork. Team camps offer participants the opportunity to sign up with their current team. The individual skills camps will focus on developing and strengthening fundamental all-around volleyball skills; the advanced specialty clinics will allow for smaller groups to fine-tune and develop their skills for specific positions, while receiving guidance from advanced coaches specializing in these areas.
