February 2018 in photos: Swimming, SOBEWFF® and Uproar

By Joel Delgado ’12, MS ’17

That’s it? Just like that, the shortest month of the year has come to a close.

February was filled with exciting events such as the annual Uproar concert and major accomplishments like the FIU swimming and diving team capturing their fourth straight conference title. The month also included heartbreak as Panthers came together to mourn the lives lost in the Majory Stoneman Douglas shooting on Valentine’s Day.

Before we move into March, take a moment to enjoy some of our favorite moments and images from February captured by FIU photographers.

We’re all smiles because baseball season is here! From left to right, freshmen Logan Allen, Jose Garcia and Christian Santana were drafted by MLB teams last year but opted to go to college to help build a powerhouse program here at FIU. Photo by Doug Garland

Sheila Lopez completed a liberal studies degree in the summer of 2017 and went straight into full-time employment as a program technician with the USDA Farm Service Agency in Florida City. She is one of several alumni featured in an upcoming FIU Magazine spread that details the university’s efforts to prepare workforce-ready graduates to fill a variety of public and private sector jobs within the state. Ramella-Roman has pioneered an easy-to-use imaging system for the diagnosis of cervical cancer, which is potentially life changing for many women with little or no access to specialized health care. You can call her the Burger Queen! Psychology senior Angelic Cox created “The Jerk Man Burger” and won this year’s Red Robin Golden Robin contest, earning a $10,000 scholarship and a chance to be featured on the Red Robin Gourmet Burgers and Brews menu in the next year. She even got to present her burger to Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives star Guy Fieri at the Food Network & Cooking Channel South Beach Wine & Food Festival! Photo by Carl-Frederick Francois

SOBEWFF® can’t go on without the help of FIU students! Every year, more than 1,000 student volunteers work more than 3,000 shifts helping out with culinary prep, marketing, ticket sales, logistics and more. Photo by Carl-Frederick Francois

I don’t know about that move, bro… Students had plenty to do as they waited for this year’s Uproar concert to begin, including a giant Jenga! Photo by Carl-Frederick Francois

Uproar 2018 did not disappoint! Organized by the Student Programming Council, the annual concert is one of FIU’s most anticipated events of the Spring semester. This year’s concert featured Jesse McCartney (pictured above), the Ying Yang Twins and A-Trak. Photo by Carl-Frederick Francois
