FIU will not rescind  admission decisions of incoming students who receive disciplinary action from their high school for participating in peaceful demonstrations, joining a growing number of universities nationally that are taking a similar stance on student activism.

FIU’s Kevin B. Coughlin, Jr., interim vice president for enrollment management, released the following statement:

The core values of FIU are Truth, Freedom, Respect, Responsibility and Excellence and we have always promoted meaningful and purposeful engagement in community and public affairs. FIU Office of Admissions and Office of Academic Integrity will not rescind the admission decisions of incoming students who receive disciplinary action from their high school for participating in peaceful demonstrations.

The statement comes in the wake of reports that some high schools around the country have threatened students with suspension if they take part in school walkouts demanding stronger gun-control policies in the wake of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 dead.
