On Thursday morning (March 15, 2018), at 9:00 a.m., the Design Build Team of MCM and FIGG, convened a meeting at the MCM trailer, located on the construction site, to discuss a crack that appeared on the structure. The FIGG engineer of record delivered a technical presentation regarding the crack and concluded that there were no safety concerns and the crack did not compromise the structural integrity of the bridge. This meeting lasted approximately two hours and included FIU and FDOT representatives.
The investigation is ongoing to determine the collapse of the bridge, and FIU is fully cooperating with all authorities to understand what happened.

Under the terms of the procurement issued by FIU and due to the unique characteristics of the design of the bridge, an independent, secondary design check was required,” FDOT spokesman Dick Kane said in an email. “Under this project, it is the responsibility of FIU’s design build team to select the firm used to conduct the independent, secondary review. The firm selected, Louis Berger, was not FDOT pre-qualified for this service, which is required under FIU’s agreement with the state.”
This point made by the FDOT immediately after the incident has been debunked and not repeated by them since. The FIU selected firm, Louis Berger, is an internationally renowned, NJ based firm that has performed primary and secondary reviews, analysis, engineering analysis for bridges all around the world, including many iconic suspension bridges such as the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, Da Nang’s Dragon Bridge, Chesapeake Bay Bridge, George Washington Bridge, and the Sava River Bridge in Belgrade, Serbia, among others.
The fact that they have built bridges elsewhere is irrelevant as those other bridges did not use the same construction technique. They were not FDOT approved as per the FDOT website. You can check out the FDOT website at the link below where it clearly indicates that FDOT did not approve the firm chosen by FIU.

In any case, the law will take its course and people will be held accountable to their actions (or lack thereof). Hope that the people that lost their loved ones get the justice that they deserve.
