Southwest 8th Street reopened this morning. All traffic around MMC has returned to normal, including the Turnpike exits.

  • Southwest 8th Street remains closed; FHP announced it may reopen this weekend.
  • Uber offers 50 percent off rides to and from MMC
  • Fair open today – expect congestion

As authorities continue to work to open up Southwest 8th Street, we would like to share the following parking updates to help your commute to MMC today:

Uber discount

  • Now through Tuesday, March 27, Uber is offering 50 percent off Uber POOL or Express POOL trips to and from MMC (up to $10 per trip). Use the code FIUCOMMUTE. To apply the code, in the Uber app, choose Payment > Promotions > Add Promo/Gift Code and type in FIUCOMMUTE. To sign up for Uber, please visit uber.com/ride.

Parking and Traffic

  • Southwest 8th Street remains closed to vehicle traffic from 107th Avenue to 117thAvenue. The Florida Highway Patrol announced yesterday that it could reopen sometime this weekend once road repairs are completed. We will keep you updated and will provide final confirmation once 8th Street has been reopened.  
  • In addition to east and west entrances and exits to MMC, you may now go westbound on Southwest 8th Street through the Southwest 112th Avenue exit.
  • The eastbound exits from the Florida Turnpike are closed. Use Southwest 40th Street or Northwest 12th Street exits.
  • For access to the west side of campus, we recommend using Southwest 117th Avenue and Southwest 17th Street or Southwest 11th Street entrances. For access to the east side of campus, we recommend using Southwest 107th Avenue and Southwest 16th Street.
  • All parking garages and lots at MMC are open, except for Lot 5, which is currently under contract with the Fair. Today, during peak times, we had 2,774 student spaces available.
  • Please understand that police adjust the traffic flow throughout the day to reduce delays. This could mean restricted access to certain turn lanes and garages at different times of the day. We ask for your patience. These restrictions are temporary and are meant to improve overall traffic flow.
  • A pedestrian walkway has been opened across 8th Street to 109 Tower.
  • Please remember that the Fair is going on next door at Tamiami Park. Expect traffic congestion.
  • Vehicles will NOT be able to exit the south side of campus onto Coral Way (Southwest 24th Street) through Lot 24 (small lot located east of the Riccardo Silva Stadium) because the Fair will be operating.
  • Allow additional time for travel and carpool whenever possible. RideFlag is a carpooling app that can help you find a ride with other Panthers who live near you. Additionally, commuters are encouraged to use the FIU mobile app for garage parking space availability.
  • Supervisors, if you have staff and faculty members who can work from home, we encourage you to allow this temporary work arrangement in order to reduce traffic.

Shuttles

  • We are running shuttles between Lot 3 and 4th Street Commons.
  • We currently have six shuttles on the route and are supplementing with additional shuttles, as needed.
  • Please be patient as the shuttles may be delayed from slow traffic around campus.

Today’s Vigil:

  • SGA is holding a vigil at 10 a.m. in the GC ballrooms for the victims of the bridge collapse. Afterwards, participants will walk to the memorial site on Southwest 107thAvenue and 8th Street to leave flowers and other items in remembrance of the victims.During the walk, traffic flow will be halted to allow pedestrians to cross Campus Drive at 108th Avenue to cross into memorial site.
  • Motorists are asked to avoid the area from 11 – 11:30 a.m.
  • Please note that the east entrance to PG5 will be closed during this time.

Thank you for your patience as we work through a complicated traffic situation around MMC. Authorities continue to work to open up Southwest 8th Street.

As you know, we are running shuttles between Lot 3 and 4th Street Commons. We currently have six shuttles on the route. Please be patient as the shuttles may be delayed from slow traffic around campus.

Parking on campus has not been affected by the bridge accident. Parking is available in any of the garages. On Monday at peak times, we had over 3,000 student spaces available.

Southwest 8th Street remains closed to vehicle traffic from 107th Avenue to 117th Avenue.

However, in addition to east and west entrances and exits to MMC, you may now go westbound on Southwest 8th Street through the Southwest 112th Avenue exit.

Also, please note that a pedestrian walkway has been opened across 8th Street to 109th Tower, which we hope will make getting to campus easier. Please see the map below.
