President Rosenberg delivers Greek life update, shares final reinstatement decisions

President Mark B. Rosenberg shared the following message with the university community on May 2, 2018:

Since my last update, we have continued to make great strides to improve and strengthen fraternity and sorority life at FIU. I would like to share some recent reinstatement decisions and other updates.

Reinstatement Decisions

Last month, we held the third and final round of reinstatement hearings for those organizations that were not previously reinstated. Additionally, the two organizations that were provided a tailored reinstatement schedule due to their conduct statuses – Beta Theta Pi and Sigma Alpha Mu – began their reinstatement processes.

Effective Monday, April 9, three chapters were approved for reinstatement:

Interfraternity Council (IFC)

  • Alpha Epsilon Pi
  • Lambda Chi Alpha
  • Sigma Chi

Effective Tuesday, May 1, one additional chapter was approved for reinstatement:

Interfraternity Council (IFC)

  • Beta Theta Pi

With the first, second and third rounds, this totals 30 reinstated fraternities and sororities.

Please note that after the three rounds the following organizations were not reinstated:

Interfraternity Council (IFC)

  • Delta Lambda Phi

Multicultural Greek Council (MGC)

  • Lambda Theta Phi

National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)

  • Omega Psi Phi

These three chapters will no longer be recognized by Fraternity & Sorority Life. Combining the reinstatement process and conduct decisions, this brings the total number of organizations that are not recognized to six

Chapter Status Updates and Conduct Overview

As noted above, Sigma Alpha Mu is still undergoing their reinstatement process. Final decision on their status will be shared with the chapter after their presentation later this month.

Since the last update shared, Alpha Phi Alpha has been placed on interim suspension for an alleged violation of the alcohol ban.
