groups
country provides many opportunities for minority groups to
advance and to establish equality between people. However,
there are other aspects of Dr. King’s dream that have
not yet come true. It is up to the new breed of leaders to
carry on his legacy and “reach beyond his dream,”
lifting America to an amazing, unified nation.
It is
be feasible to take Dr. King’s dream to new heights
if each individual seizes the opportunity to expand his or
her mind. Then, as a community, we would have the ability
to rise, obtain success and achieve our goals. Through education,
one’s perspective can be broadened; this will prevent
the manipulation of mankind by higher authorities. People
will not simply stand still and allow the authorities to eradicate
programs such as affirmative action, Medicare, and welfare
that benefit them and their communities.
The knowledge
attained by these individuals can also give them the power
to surmount any obstacles placed before them. For example,
poverty will no longer serve as a barrier to keep people from
realizing their dreams. The power that accompanies knowledge
cannot be taken away by anyone. With each individual making
his or her contribution, we will successfully fulfill Dr.
King’s dream of social equality.
In one
of his speeches, Dr. King mentions that “…we will
be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into
a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.” This transformation
requires the collaboration of individuals within their own
small communities. It is essential that we work together to
build each other up instead of breaking each other down. Accountability
is also important for the development of a harmonious society.
We must understand that in order for the entire community
to rise, we are not only responsible for our own actions but
for the actions of others as well. We must have the boldness
to reproach them when they do wrong, yet defend and support
them when in need.
When
we achieve that “beautiful symphony of brotherhood”
among ourselves, we will also have the power to demonstrate
teamwork with others outside of our sectors. We will learn
to cope with differences and establish a fraternal bond, which
in turn, will enable us to carry Dr. King’s legacy “beyond
his dream.”
