Marianna Baum, Dietetics and Nutrition, was awarded $483,996 from the National Institutes of Health for "Zinc Therapy in Zinc Deficient HIV+ Drug Users."

Irma Becerra-Fernandez, Decision Sciences and Information Systems, was appointed to the Advisory Board of StrataSys, a South Florida strategic consulting, e-business and technology solution firm. StrataSys recently awarded a grant to FIU's Knowledge Management Lab, under Becerra-Fernandez's direction, to fund a research project on intelligent application integration. The lab will develop a StrataSys Celware Certification Center, which will enable StrataSys and FIU to validate solutions that allow organizations to connect disconnected systems and maximize their technology investments.

Bradford Clement, Geology, was awarded $102,234 from the National Science Foundation for "Ocean Drilling Program in the Division of Ocean Sciences."

Robert Dollinger, MD, Health Care and Wellness Center, was recently elected a fellow of the American College Health Association, one of the association's highest honors. Dollinger was elected to fellow status by his peers based upon his 12 years of leadership and innovative service to the field of college health on an institutional, state, regional and national level.

Marvin Dunn, Psychology, received $25,000 from Miami-Dade Empowerment Trust, Inc. for "African-American Walk Through History."

Albert Gan, Civil Engineering, received $140,000 from the Florida Department of Transportation Research Center for "Phase II Development of Florida Transit Information System."

Ronald Jones, SERC, received $792,000 from the Department of the Army for "Periphyton Design and Analysis for the C-51 (STA 1-East) Project." He also received $100,000 from the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners for "Monitoring of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary."

Lidia Kos, Biological Sciences, was awarded $60,000 from the American Heart Association for "Signaling in Cardiac Development."

Kalai Mathee, Biological Sciences, received $43,200 from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for "Ginseng as a Possible Therapeutic Agent Against Pseudomonas Aeruginosa."

Lemmietta McNeilly,Communication Sciences and Disorders, received $43,412 from the University of Florida for "Project CARE."

Richard Olson, International Hurricane Center and Political Science, was awarded $60,648 from the University of South Florida for "Disaster Learning, Poder Convocatorio and Coordination in Six Latin American Countries."

Dennis Wiedman, assistant to the provost, co-authored an article with Janell Smith, a doctoral candidate in Nutrition, which was published in the May 2001 issue of Journal of the American Dietetic Association -- "Fat content of South Florida Indian frybread: Health implications for a pervasive Native-American food."
