Dale Ayres, Wolfe University Center, recently received two grants totaling $20,678. The first grant, from the Dade Community Foundation, is in support of projects involving the M'Ensemble African American theatre company and the Marine Animal Rescue Society (MARS). The second grant, from the Human Rights Foundation, is in support of the Teams Ropes Adventure Challenge program. David Barton Bray, Environmental Studies, was invited to give a paper on sustainable rural development in 21st century Latin America at a symposium on "21st Century Public Policy in the Americas," sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and the Library of Congress. Bray also received a $165,000 grant from the Ford Foundation for a project on "Community Forestry in Mexico: Lessons Learned and Future Prospects for a Global Model in Community-Based Natural Forest Management." Miguel Escotet, International Development Education and Research, was elected to the Board of Directors of the Comparative and International Education Society, the primary national and international professional association in the field. Escotet's term runs from 2001-2004. Piero Gardinali, Chemistry/SERC, was awarded $88,000 from Collier County, Florida, for "Effects of Increased Urban and Agricultural Land Use on the Anthropogenic Loading to Southwest Florida Estuaries: Baseline Information to Assess Changing Watersheds." Guillermo Grenier, Center for Labor Research, received $56,443 from Many Voices: One Community for "The Mosaic Initiative." Stephen Leatherman, International Hurricane Center, was awarded $959,190 from the Florida Department of Community Affairs for "Windstorm and Simulation Modeling." Mary Levitt, Psychology, received $145,200 from the Spencer Foundation for "Social Networks and School Adaptation in Immigrant Children and Adolescents." Nong Jian Tao, Physics, was awarded $153,501 from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research for "Fabrication and Measurement Facility for Molecular Electronics." Greg Wilkins, Wolfe University Center, was selected to represent FIU at the Association of College Unions International preconference workshop, "Stop the Hate: Campus Hate Crime Prevention," held in Toronto, Canada. Yifu Zhu, Physics, received $32,300 from the Office of Naval Research for "Atom Optics with Dark Hollow Beams." |
