HCET assisting in World Trade
Center cleanup
Deactivation and decommissioning engineers
from FIU's Hemispheric Center for Environmental Technology (HCET)
have responded to the call from Frank Hanley, general president
of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), to support
operating engineers involved with the cleanup of the World Trade
Center site in Manhattan.

According to a recent independent benchmarking
study of 76 accredited MBA programs, FIU's College of Business
Administration's International MBA (IMBA) program scored at or

Union Center
The inauguration of the FIU/University of
Miami (UM) European Union Center, a prestigious "think tank"
focusing on economic, political and social issues related to the
European Union (EU), was held on Tues., Sept. 18, at University
Park at a ceremony that both university presidents attended.
University awarded grant
for new marine mammal rehabilitation pool
FIU has secured $150,000 to build a state-of-the-art
rehabilitation pool that will give beached marine mammals a second
chance at life and boost scientific research in South Florida.
Native American Studies
scholar-in-residence hopes to reach wide audience
LaDonna Harris, noted Amerindian national
leader and statesman, will be at FIU October 22-26 as the Helen
J. Dunnick Scholar-in-Residence in Native American Studies, lecturing
to the public and seven classes on topics including Native American
and U.S. medical practices, American Indian women, dance and literature,
as well as Native American perspectives on the environment.
Peer Advisors play vital
role helping students transition to college life
The Orientation Peer Advisors are a team
of undergraduate student leaders who assist with all aspects of
freshman and transfer orientation programs at both campuses.

International Hurricane Center, was awarded $700,000
from the Florida Department of Community Affairs for
"Hurricane Loss Reduction for Housing." Erik
Camayd-Freixas, Modern Languages, received $86,800 from
McNeil Consumer Products Company, for "State of
Florida Interpreter Training Program."
Kathleen R. Martin,
Sociology/Anthropology, has been elected to the Committee
on Ethics of the American Anthropological Association.
Kalai Mathee,
Biological Sciences, was awarded $184,777 from the
National Institute of General Medical Sciences for
"The Regulation of Beta-lactamase in Pseudomonas
Aeruginosa."
Stephan Mintz, Physics,
received $24,233 from Southeastern Universities Research
Association, for "SURA/CEBAF-Sponsored Research
in Medium Energy Physics."
Kathleen Rein,
Chemistry, was awarded $60,927 from the National Institute
of Environmental Health Sciences for "Environmental
Health Science at FIU."
Naphtali Rishe,
Computer Science, received two grants recently: a
$262,000 grant from the Department of the Interior,
National Park Service, for "Database Management
Research for Everglades National Park," and $122,320
from Tampa Bay Water for "Ikonos Satellite Imagery
for Regionally Operated Wellfields."
Mark Shermis,
Education, was awarded $58,311 from the Department
of Education for his proposal, "Automated Essay
Grading for Electronic Portfolios."
M.O. Thirunarayanan,
Education, recently had his paper, "The Seekers,"
published in the Sept. 11-17 issue of Ubiquity, an
online magazine/forum of the Association for Computing
Machinery.
Jiandi Zhang,
Physics, received $199,339 from the Office of Naval
Research for "Acquisition of an In situ Laser-Assisted
Molecular Beam Epitoxy Facility for the Growth of
Complex Materials."
