University establishes employee scholarship program
In a move to offset the Florida Legislature's elimination of tuition-free
courses for state employees, FIU President Modesto A. Maidique announced
the creation of the FIU Employee Scholarship Program effective with
the 2001 Fall semester. The program will allow employees who meet
the eligibility requirements to enroll for up to six (6) credit
hours per semester, and employees participating in this program
will not have to wait toregister on a space-available basis.
In a memo announcing the program, Maidique said, "As an educational
institution, we should be committed to ensuring that our employees
are provided every opportunity to participate in furthering their
education by attending the University with the intent of receiving
a college degree."
Employees who participate in the program: must be a full-time employee;
must have completed one (1) year of full-time, continuous, permanent
service; must be admitted as a degree-seeking undergraduate student
or must be admitted by a graduate program; and may, if approved
by their supervisor, enroll as special students and take courses
specifically related to their job assignments.
