Tayna Lawrence Wins Bronze in individual 100-meter dash

Former FIU five-time All-American Tayna Lawrence won the Bronze medal in the women's 100-meter dash at the Sydney Olympics Saturday, September 23.

Running for Jamaica, Lawrence's third-place time of 11.18 nipped countrywoman and seven-time Olympic medal winner Marlene Ottey (11.19).

The US's Marion Jones (10.75) took the Gold and Ekaterini Thanou from Greece won the Silver (11.12).

Lawrence becomes the first Golden Panther athlete ever attain such status on the world stage. At FIU, she was a five-time All-American in the 55-, 100- and 200-meter dashes. Lawrence was also a four-time all-conference selection in both the Trans America Athletic and Sun Belt Conferences and was the 1998 TAAC and 1999 Sun Belt Indoor Championships Most Outstanding Performer.

She qualified for the Olympic medal round after posting the third-fastest semifinal time of 11.12. Lawrence will seek a second Olympic medal this coming week when she competes with the Jamaican 4x100 relay team.
