Award-Winning Journalist to Speak at FIU
Univision Anchor's Talk is Part of Communication Week

MIAMI, Fla. (March 16, 2001) -- Jorge Ramos, an Emmy-Award winning anchor from the Univision television network, will address Florida International University students and faculty and the South Florida community during the school's celebration of Communication Week.

Ramos, also an author and journalist, will give the week's keynote address, focusing on the topic, "What is next in Mass Communication?" His presentation is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. on Sat., March 31, in the Kovens Conference Center Ballroom, FIU-Biscayne Bay (Biscayne Boulevard and 151 Street).

"We are thrilled to have such a distinguished journalist visit FIU," said J. Arthur Heise, dean of the FIU School of Journalism and Mass Communication. "His presentation will surely be an asset to our students, staff and faculty. His visit is the highlight of this year's week."

Ramos is the senior anchor for Univision's nightly newscast, Noticero Univision. Since 1987, he has received a total of seven Emmys for his work as an anchor and as part of Univision's news team.

Additionally, Commander James McPherson, chief of Media Relations for the U.S. Coast Guard, will receive the 2001 Outstanding Alumni Award. As branch chief, McPherson coordinates media coverage, both nationally and internationally, concerning Coast Guard missions and policies.
