MIAMI, Fla. (March 28, 2001) - Florida International University named a key student thoroughfare and gathering spot Wednesday for Betty B. Chapman, a longtime supporter of FIU and leader in Miami charitable and community organizations.

The Betty B. Chapman Student Plaza was dedicated at a noon ceremony at FIU- University Park led by President Modesto A. Maidique in honor of Mrs. Chapman's 80th birthday. Also in attendance were here husband, Alvah H. Chapman, former chairman of Knight-Ridder, Inc., and trustee and chairman emeritus of the FIU Board of Trustees, and Mrs. Chapman's daughter, Dale Chapman Webb, FIU vice president for University Advancement.

"Like many spouses of public figures, Betty is sometimes not appropriately recognized. The Chapmans' many years of service to this community have been a team effort, and Betty has played a critical role," said Maidique. "We have certainly been the beneficiaries of her selflessness at FIU. Through the Chapman Plaza in the very heart of our campus, her legacy will live for generations to come and remind our students what leadership and service are all about."

A Georgia native and alumna of the University of Georgia, Mrs. Chapman moved to South Florida with her family in 1960.
