Governor
Announces Florida International University Board of Trustees
MIAMI,
Fla. (June 26, 2001) - Gov. Jeb Bush today announced the appointees
to the Florida International University (FIU) Board of Trustees.
The Board will set policy and serve as the institution's legal owner
and final authority responsible for efficient and effective use
of resources.
"Over
the past 30 years, Florida International University has become one
of Florida's top research institutions, as well as one of the engines
driving the region's vibrant growth and dynamism," said Gov.
Bush. "I am confident that the new Board of Trustees will work
diligently to ensure FIU's continued success."
Joined
by chairman of the Education Governance Reorganization Transition
Task Force Phil Handy and FIU President Modesto Maidique, Gov. Bush
announced the following appointments:
Betsy
Atkins is president and CEO of Baja LLC, an independent venture
capital firm that helps high-tech companies raise funds for their
early stages of development. She is a member of the Florida Venture
Forum and the Baptist Hospital Board. She regularly serves as a
guest lecturer at Stanford University and FIU. Ms. Atkins received
her bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1975.
She resides in Coral Gables.
Rafael
Calderón, former president of Costa Rica, is currently
the managing partner of the Calderón & Associates Law
Firm. President Calderón has successfully combined a career
in academia with his political activities, serving for many years
as a professor of international relations in several Costa Rican
universities. President Calderón received his law degree
in 1972 from the University of Costa Rica. He is a resident of Aventura.
Paul
Cejas served as U.S. ambassador to Belgium during the administration
of President Bill Clinton. He has also served in South Florida as
a civic and business leader for more than 25 years, and currently
serves on the board of the FIU Foundation. He also served as a Dade
County School Board member from 1980 to 1988 and has worked on an
advisory committee for the Florida Education Finance Program. He
received his bachelor's degree form the University of Miami in 1969
and lives in Miami Beach.

Alvah
Chapman is the retired CEO of Knight Ridder, Inc. He has been
closely associated with FIU since its inception. He served on the
university's Advisory Board in the early 1970s, and since 1988 has
served on the FIU Foundation. He was the Foundation's chairman for
five years, and was later elected chairman emeritus, a position
he still holds. Mr. Chapman graduated from The Citadel in 1942,
receiving a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. He and
wife Betty, in whose honor the FIU Student Plaza is named, reside
in Miami.
Armando
Codina is the chairman and CEO of the Codina Group and a founding
member of the FIU Council of 100. Mr. Codina is currently involved
leading the effort to launch FIU's Graduate School of Business Administration's
new building. His involvement in issues affecting the community
has led him to serve in a number of organizations, including the
Community Partnership for the Homeless, the Florida Council of 100,
the Florida Council of Economic Education and as a mentor in the
public school system. He lives in Coral Gables.
Albert
Dotson, Sr. is chairman and CEO of Puryear, Inc., a consulting
firm. As a business and community leader, his work in support of
higher education in South Florida has been widely recognized. He
has been a member of the FIU Foundation Board of Trustees since
1983. Mr. Dotson was also appointed to FIU's most recent presidential
search committee by the chancellor of the State University System.
He is a former president and CEO of the Greater Miami Chamber of
Commerce. Mr. Dotson has also been involved in a number of civic
organizations, including the NAACP, the Salvation Army and the Baptist
Hospital Board. He attended Wayne State University in Detroit, and
received an honorary doctorate of law from Barry University in 1998.
Mr. Dotson is a resident of Miami.
Patricia
Frost is a retired public school principal whose affiliation
with FIU dates back to 1984. She is a member of the FIU Foundation
Board and has worked closely with the FIU School of Education since
1970. Ms. Frost has served as an adjunct professor at FIU and the
University of Miami. She received the Outstanding Educator of the
Year award from FIU and has endowed a professorship in Education
and Sociology. Ms. Frost received her bachelor's degree from Colby
College in 1959 and her master's degree from Columbia University
in 1961. She resides in Miami Beach.
Adolfo
Henriques, an FIU alumnus, has served in various capacities
on the University's Foundation Board for the past 10 years. He is
currently the board's treasurer and chairman/CEO of Union Planters
Bank. His experience as a former member of the Florida Board of
Regents will be a great asset to FIU's Board of Trustees. Mr. Henriques
received his bachelor's degree from St. Leo College in 1975 and
his master's degree in accounting form FIU 1976. He is a resident
of Miami.
Miriam
Lopez is president and CEO of TransAtlantic Bank, a position
she has held since 1985. She served as chair for the American Bankers
Association Community Council from 1999-2000 and as president of
the Florida Bankers Association from 2000-2001. Ms. Lopez serves
on the Board of Trustees of Barry University and is a mentor for
the local public school system. She received her bachelor's degree
in education in 1972 form Barry College and an accounting certificate
from the University of Miami in 1972. She resides in Miami.

David
Parker is the managing partner of the venture capital firm Interprise
Technology Partners, L.P. He served as the Beacon Council's chairman
in 1995 and is also a member of the FIU Foundation Board of Trustees.
His experience with public/private partnerships will be a great
asset to FIU's Board of Trustees. He received his bachelor's degree
in 1965 from the University of Texas and his master's degree from
Harvard University in 1972. Mr. Parker lives in Coral Gables.
Rosa
Sugrañes has been a member of the FIU Foundation Board
of Trustees since 1995 and a member of the University's Executive
Committee since 1996. In 1999, the Small Business Council of America
named her the Small Business Person of the Year, and last year Gov.
Bush appointed her to the Florida Transportation Commission. Ms.
Sugrañes is the chairman and founder of Iberia Tiles Corp.
She received her bachelor's degree in business administration in
1979 from the University of Barcelona. She lives in Key Biscayne.
Dr. Herbert Wertheim is a former chairman and vice-chairman
of the FIU Foundation Board of Trustees. Besides having served on
FIU's Foundation for the past 14 years, he served as chairman and
co-chair of the University's Capital Campaign, which raised more
than $200 million, and as chairman of its Academic Affairs Committee.
Dr. Wertheim received his bachelor's degree from the Southern College
of Optometry. He is a resident of Coral Gables.
Elected
president by the FIU student body, Victor Romano, of Miami,
is the 13th member of the Board of Trustees.
Senate Bill 1162, sponsored by Sens. Ken Pruitt (Port St. Lucie)
and Jim Sebesta (St. Petersburg) and former Senator Jim Horne (Orange
Park), and Reps. Evelyn Lyn (Ormond Beach) and Dennis Baxley (Ocala),
requires the governor to appoint a Board of Trustees for each of
Florida's 11 public universities.
