MIAMI (Aug. 21, 2002) – Florida International
University welcomes the class of 2006 with a special Freshman
Convocation. Convocation serves as a way to introduce the university’s
incoming freshmen to the traditions and the history of FIU.
“It is important that our students not only learn to excel
in their academic endeavors, but also in their social skills,”
said FIU Provost Mark Rosenberg. “We want our students
to be united and to develop a sense of camaraderie. We want
them to feel part of the class of 2006.”
The event, which will be held on Sunday, August 25 at 2:30 p.m.
in the Golden Panther Arena at University Park, will introduce
students to key university administrators, many of whom will
be dressed in full regalia. Students will be taught the FIU
Alma Mater, and a reception will follow the ceremony.
“This is a wonderful time at FIU,” said Vice President
for Academic Affairs Rosa Jones. “Convocation is a celebration
of our newest students and allows them to be inducted into the
FIU family.”
Students will not only hear from the university’s administrators,
but will also be addressed by their peers. Incoming freshmen
will hear from four FIU students, who will, through a dialogue
on stage, share many of the University's services and activities
with the new students. Students will also participate in the
ceremonial passing of the Torch of Knowledge. Two new students
will be given the torch as a symbol of the academic endeavors
students will be engaged in while at FIU.
