Creator Of ‘Flow’ Notion Of Creativity And Happiness To Lecture At FIU

MIAMI, Fla. (Sept. 26, 2002) -- One of the world’s foremost authorities on the psychology of creativity and human happiness will be presenting a Phi Beta Kappa Lecture as part of Florida International University’s 30th anniversary celebration. Milhaly Csikszentmihalyi will lecture on “Flow: the Psychology of Optimal Experience” on Monday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. in the Graham Center Ballroom at FIU-University Park, Southwest Eighth Street and 107 Avenue. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Csikszentmihalyi (pronounced chick-sent-me-high-ee) is a Davidson Professor of Psychology and director of the Quality of Life Research Center at the Drucker Graduate School of Management of the Claremont Graduate University. He has devoted his life's work to the study of what makes people truly happy, satisfied and fulfilled and is best known as the architect of the concept of “flow” in creativity.

According to Csikszentmihalyi, people enter a “flow” state when they are fully absorbed in activity during which they lose their sense of time and have feelings of great satisfaction. Csikszentmihalyi describes flow as "being completely involved in an activity for its own sake. The ego falls away. Time flies. Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz. Your whole being is involved, and you're using your skills to the utmost."

Prior to the Drucker School, Csikszentmihalyi spent more than 20 years at the University of Chicago, where he was a professor of Human Development and chair of the Department of Psychology. He co-founded the "Positive Psychology" movement in the American Psychological Association. He has written 185 journal articles and 14 books including Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience (1990) and Finding Flow: The Psychology of Engagement with Everyday Life (1997). His work has been the subject of major stories on NOVA, and other television shows and in publications including Newsweek, The New York Times, and Psychology Today.
