FIU Architecture School Faculty And Students Nearly Sweep Architecture Awards

MIAMI (Feb. 1, 2001) - Florida International University's School of Architecture (SOA) faculty and students were winners of many of the awards and honors recently presented at the 2001 AIA Miami Awards.

"When so many of our faculty and students are honored in this fashion, it only validates our efforts to provide a top-notch education for our students," said FIU SOA Dean Juan Antonio Bueno. "It gives us great satisfaction to have done so well at this professional award ceremony."

FIU President Modesto A. Maidique was presented with the AIA Community Leadership for Architecture Award for the support he gave the architecture community when he and former Architecture Dean William McMinn petitioned a design competition for the new FIU Paul Cejas Architecture Building, which is in its final construction phases.


FIU SOA winners included:

Juan Antonio Bueno, SOA dean, AIA Meritorious Service Award

Jaime Canavés, SOA assoc. professor, AIA Education Leadership Award; AIA Meritorious Service and Appreciation Awards; and the AIA Silver Medal for Best Design, which is the highest honor award bestowed upon an AIA member

Marilys Nepomechie, SOA asst. professor, AIA Young Firm of the Year, Award of Excellence in Unbuilt Design

Lourdes Solera, SOA adjunct faculty, AIA Miami Public Service Award

Steven Brooke, SOA adjunct faculty, AIA Architectural Photographer of the Year

Adolfo Albaisa, SOA adjunct faculty, Un-build Award of Excellence for Design

Chad Oppenheim, SOA adjunct faculty, AIA Outstanding Young Architect of the Year; Un-built Award of Excellence for Design for the Sky Harbor Island in North Bay Village

Daisy Álvarez, SOA adjunct faculty, AIA 2nd Place Award for International Photography Competition; Honorable Mention for the International Photography Competition; AIA Meritorious Service Award
