MIAMI, Fla. – (Oct. 09,
2002) – Dr. Alan Carsrud, an expert
on family and small business as well
as on start-up ventures and entrepreneurial companies, has been
appointed Clinical Professor of Entrepreneurship in the Management
and International Business Department at FIU’s College of
Business Administration (CBA), announced Dr. Joyce Elam, executive
dean of the CBA.
Dr. Carsrud, who will assume his new post in December, 2002, will
teach courses in the areas of corporate entrepreneurship, new
venture initiation, business plan writing and preparation, and
family businesses. He also will engage other faculty members in
research projects, conferences, and course development. Additionally,
he will be instrumental in developing and launching the College’s
Center for Global Entrepreneurship by fostering academic and business
partnerships and creating new family business ventures as well
as those in high growth areas such as biotechnology and telecommunications
technology.
“A respected and accomplished educator, researcher, and
business professional, Dr. Carsrud will be a welcome addition
to the College,” Elam said. “With his high level of
entrepreneurial expertise, academic prowess, and keen business
acumen, he is the ideal person to cultivate the College’s
entrepreneurship programs and provide the leadership necessary
to initiate and successfully grow its Center for Global Entrepreneurship.”
Prior to joining the CBA, Dr. Carsrud was executive director of
the UCLA Venture Development Program, which helps to commercialize
technology through
new venture development. At UCLA’s Anderson School, he was
a senior lecturer in The Price Center for Entrepreneurial Studies
and chaired the Family & Closely-Held Business Program. Moreover,
he was a senior lecturer in Technology Entrepreneurship in UCLA’s
Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. In addition
to UCLA, Dr. Carsrud has taught graduate business plan development
at the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Southern
California and at Pepperdine University.
An active entrepreneur in his own right, Dr. Carsrud was on the
start-up team at People Express Airlines and served as founding
director of CytoSignal, a biotechnology and drug discovery company.
He served on the boards of various other ventures in biotechnology,
accounting, sensor and control technology, venture capital, computer
security, beverages, marketing and public relations, building
products and financial services located in California, Chile and
Australia.
An accomplished author, Dr. Carsrud has published more than 120
articles and chapters in his field. He has served in leadership
positions for various professional organizations, including vice
president for both the International Council for Small Business
and the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Family Firm Institute
and is founding associate editor of Entrepreneurship and Regional
Development. He also serves on the editorial board of
Family Business Review.
