Program Designed to Provide Working
Professionals with the Opportunity to Earn Undergraduate Business
Degree Completely Online
MIAMI, Fla. – (Oct. 21, 2002) –
In January 2003, FIU’s College of Business Administration
(CBA) will expand its existing online core curriculum to include
courses required to complete a B.A. in Business Administration
with a major in international business. The International Business
Major Online (IBMOL) option is designed to provide students who
cannot attend a residency degree program due to work schedules,
distance or other factors with access to courses 24 hours a day,
seven days a week.
“We are delighted that our online courses continue to attract
students,” said CBA Executive Dean Joyce J. Elam. “Because
of the new online major’s convenience, students won’t
have to come to campus to complete their undergraduate degree
in international business after taking the required business core
online.”
Students taking business courses online may access a course anytime,
anywhere by using Internet Explorer version 5.0 or higher. Since
a campus commute is eliminated, students save time. The program
also allows students to design an individual curriculum and determine
their semester course-load.
“Online learning certainly offers students more flexibility
than ever before,” said Yair Levy, CBA director of online
learning. “Participants must also be prepared to make a
strong personal commitment because there’s more responsibility.
Students decide when to study, when to participate and when to
undertake an assignment.”
Online learning at the CBA has seen about a 25 percent increase
per semester since its initial launch last year. Currently, more
than 950 students are taking the 32 business courses offered over
the Internet.
Florida International University’s College of Business Administration
(CBA), South Florida’s business education leader with unique
expertise in international business and information technology
(IT), is the second largest of FIU’s professional schools,
enrolling approximately 3,300 undergraduate and more than 1,000
graduate students each year. It also is South Florida’s
top-rated business research school and one of only 424 business
schools in the world accredited by the AACSB International—The
Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The College’s
Alvah H. Chapman, Jr., Graduate School of Business offers the
6th- largest part-time MBA program among this group, and its IT
faculty has been ranked among the top 20 (11th) in the U.S. in
terms of research productivity. Its Executive MBA program was
ranked at or near the top in a recent Executive MBA Council study
and U.S. News and World Report (October 15, 2001) ranked
its Global Executive MBA program among the top 25 best online
MBA programs. The August 23, 2002 issue of America Economia, a
premier pan-regional business journal, rated the Chapman School
among the top 50 international MBA schools for Latin American
students in a global ranking. Hispanic Business (March
2002) ranked the CBA among the top five business schools for Hispanics.
It also is one of only 30 business schools to have received a
Department of Education grant to establish and support an international
business center.
