Two film world
premieres and talks by several distinguished screenwriters will
be among the highlights of the second annual Miami Screen/Writers
Series, Sun., Dec. 1-Wed., Dec. 4 at FIU-Biscayne Bay (BBC) and
the Wolfsonian-FIU.
Hosted by the Florida International
University Creative Writing Program and sponsored by BV Wines,
the Screen/Writers Series explores the interface between literature
and film via screenings, talks, lectures and panel discussions
with award-winning screenwriters, novelists, directors and producers.
All events are free and open to the
public. Events on Dec. 1-3 will take place at the Mary Ann Wolfe
Theater at FIU-BBC, 3000 N.E. 151st St., North Miami ; the Series
will close on Dec. 4, with Alan Trustman’s lecture at the
FIU-Wolfsonian, 1001 Washington Ave., Miami Beach
“Through
the screening of films and live discussion with key creators we
hope to explore and deepen understanding of the collaborative
efforts between novelists, screenwriters and directors, ”
says Campbell McGrath, series director and FIU professor of Creative
Writing.
The distinguished faculty of FIU’s
Creative Writing Program play an integral role in hosting the
visiting artists of the Screen/Writers Series, which this year
will include:
- Larry Doyle, Emmy-winning writer/producer of
The Simpsons, is currently directing Warner Brothers’
first new series of Looney Tunes shorts in almost 30 years,
and will present a world premiere sneak preview of several of
these still-in-production cartoons. A former editor at Spy magazine,
Doyle is also the writer of two feature films scheduled for
release in 2003: The Duplex, starring Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore
and directed by Danny Devito; and Back In Action, a live action/animation
mix directed by Joe Dante and starring the Looney Tunes characters
alongside Brendan Frazier.
- Doyle will discuss comedy writing, Bugs Bunny
and Homer Simpson, and how to avoid going insane in Hollywood,
on Sun., Dec. 1, at 3:30 p.m.
∑ Jill Sprecher has written and directed two films: Clockwatchers
(1997), starring Toni Collette, Lisa Kudrow and Parker Posey;
and this year’s critical favorite, 13 Conversations About
One Thing (2002), starring Matthew McConaughey, John Turturro,
Alan Arkin and Amy Irving. Sprecher will discuss independent
filmmaking, and host a screening of 13 Conversations About One
Thing, Mon., Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.
- Award-winning novelist John Dufresne, a member
of the FIU Creative Writing faculty, and independent filmmaker
John Philbin, will premiere The Freezer Jesus, a short film
written by Dufresne as an adaptation of his own fiction. Dufresne
and Philbin will speak about writing, screenwriting, film production
and collaboration, Tues., Dec. 3, at 7 p.m.
- Writer of over a dozen films and a former teacher
at the NYU film school, legendary screenwriter Alan Trustman’s
classic movies include Bullitt (1968), starring Steve McQueen
and Jacqueline Bisset, directed by Peter Yates; and both versions
of The Thomas Crown Affair (1968, starring Steve McQueen and
Faye Dunaway, directed by Norman Jewison; and 1999, starring
Pierce Brosnan and Renee Russo, directed by John McTiernan).
Trustman will discuss literary adaptation and host a screening
of both versions of The Thomas Crown Affair on Sun., Dec. 1;
the original version will be shown at 12 noon, followed by a
question and answer session, and the 1999 version will be shown
at 5 p.m. Trustman will close the Screen/Writers Series with
a lecture at the Wolfsonian on “How to Get Your Film Made
in Hollywood” on Wed., Dec. 4 at 7 p.m.
