MIAMI, Fla. (Nov. 26, 2002)
– More than 3,000 students will receive their degrees
from Florida International University on Mon., Dec. 16
and Tues., Dec. 17 during the fall commencement ceremonies.
These students will join more than 90,000 alumni who have graduated
from FIU since the University opened its doors 30 years ago.
FIU’s four commencement ceremonies
will highlight several South Florida leaders who will receive
honorary doctorates and service awards in recognition of their
dedication to the community and FIU. Special guests at each of
the ceremonies include:
Margretta Madden Styles.
A leader in the world of nursing, Madden Styles is past president
of the American Nurses Association (ANA), the American Nurses
Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the International Council of Nurses
(INC). Her career has revolved around issues of regulation and
credentialing in nursing worldwide. A Florida resident, Madden
Styles was the founding director of the department of nursing
at Broward Community College. She will receive an Honorary
Doctorate in Sciences on Mon, Dec. 16 during the 10 a.m. ceremony.
Patricia Frost.
A professional educator, Frost worked for the Miami-Dade County
Public School System for 28 years, where she served as the principal
for the West Laboratory School. A member of FIU’s Board
of Trustees, Frost and her husband, Phillip, are supporters of
the arts and donated $2 million to FIU four years ago to establish
the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum to be located at the
University Park. The museum is expected to be completed by 2005.
Frost has served as a trustee for the United Way of Miami and
was elected chair of the Smithsonians’s National Museum
of American Art Commission in Washington, D.C. and has served
as museum commissioner since 1998. Frost will receive
her Honorary Doctorate in Public Service on Mon., Dec. 16 during
the 3 p.m. ceremony.
Hans Küng. A
scholar of theology and philosophy, Küng is president of
the Global Ethic Foundation, an organization designed for inter-cultural,
inter-religious research, education and encounter. From 1960 until
his retirement in 1996, he was professor of Ecumenical Theology
and director of the Institute for Ecumenical Research at the University
of Tubingen, Germany. An ordained Roman Catholic priest, he was
appointed theological advisor to the world’s bishops at
the Second Vatican Council by Pope John XXIII. In 1979 he was
stripped of his right to teach as an official Roman Catholic theologian
after much criticism of papal authority. He will receive
an Honorary Doctorate in Divinity on Tues., Dec. 17 during the
10 a.m. ceremony.
Zaida Morales-Martinez.
A professor of chemistry at FIU for 29 years, Morales-Martinez
has been a member of the American Chemical Society since 1963.
She will receive a Distinguished Service Award for her
university service on Tues., Dec. 17 during the 10 a.m. ceremony.
Angel Medina, Jr.
Regional President of Union Planters Bank Miami-Dade, Medina is
responsible for Union Planters’ financial services activities
in Miami-Dade. Medina is a strong supporter of community issues.
He is an active board member of the YMCA and the Goodwill Industries.
He is also on the Board of Directors for the Miami City Ballet
and is a board member of the Dean’s Council for the FIU
College of Business Administration. Medina will receive
a Distinguished Service Award for his alumni service on Tues.,
Dec. 17 during the 3 p.m. ceremony.
All commencement exercises will be
held at FIU’s Golden Panther Arena, University Park, Southwest
Eighth Street and 112 Avenue. The schedule of the ceremonies is
