MIAMI, Fla. (December 4, 2002)
– The Academy for Lifelong Learning, a division
of the College of Continuing and Professional Studies, will launch
its winter semester with 100 six-week courses running from January
13th through April 7th. This winter session will be comprised
of two terms, A and B, and will be offered at sites that are convenient
to students who work or reside in north and south Miami. Pre-registration
discounts will be available to students who enroll prior to the
beginning of each term. The Kovens Conference Center, the north
site, is located at FIU’s Biscayne Bay campus at 3000 N.E.
151st Street on Biscayne Boulevard. Beth David Congregation, the
new south site, is located at 2625 SW 3rd Avenue on Coral Way,
near downtown Miami.
The Academy’s winter semester
will feature both old favorites and new
courses. Students may choose from a wide selection of courses
ranging from bellydancing and yoga to acupressure and aroma therapy;
from drawing and glass painting to journaling or learning a new
language. Students can take art history, Jewish studies, foreign
travel, opera, computer, and foreign film; or they can participate
in one of several current event forums. For example, following
a lapse of several years, the Academy will once again offer the
very popular Great Decisions course with instructor George Katzman.
This national program was created to generate informed opinion
on U.S. foreign policy. Sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association,
Great Decisions annually provides participants with expert, balanced
analyses on global issues shaping U.S. foreign policy. Topics
for the 2003 season include Afghanistan, women and human rights,
and China. At the conclusion of the course, students all over
the country complete an opinion ballot, which is sent to the U.S.
State Department.
New Academy courses at the north location
include Wonders of the Seashore, taught by marine biologist, Dr.
Franklyn Te. We live within minutes of the seashore, yet most
of us know little about our marine environment. This passionate
instructor will share his vast knowledge of the creatures that
inhabit our shores, and the mangrove and coral reef habitats in
which they live. Dr. Te will discuss the human impact on our coast,
resources, and overall environment. The last class will be a reef
walk behind the university campus on Biscayne Bay.
The Academy will offer evening courses
on both campuses. For example, Arthur Barron, saxophonist and
jazz expert, will take students on an entertaining journey into
the world of 20th century jazz, America’s own musical art
form. The course includes listening labs, as well as field trips
to local jazz clubs.
Parents of young children ages preschool
to twelve, will benefit from courses offered by FIU’s Youth
and Family Development program. These courses are designed to
enhance the parent-child relationship by offering information
about children’s developmental stages, their emotional development,
and effective parenting techniques. The “emotionally intelligent
parenting” workshop includes a valuable individual assessment
session including feedback and goal-setting.
The Academy for Lifelong Learning
is offering discounts to those students who pre-register. Students
will have the opportunity to learn more about the course offerings,
meet the instructors, and receive discounts at the Academy’s
Open House Event on Wednesday, December 18th from 10 a.m. –
2 p.m. Refreshments will be served and registration will be available
on site. The Open House will be held at the Kovens Conference
Center at FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus located at 3000 N.E.
151st Street in North Miami.
