Women’s basketball routs Stony Brook en route to title

The FIU women’s basketball team wasted no time in dispensing of Stony Brook, 96-44, en route to winning the Stony Brook Tournament title on Sat., Dec. 7, in New York.

The Golden Panthers raced out to a 29-8 lead in the first 10 minutes and never looked back. FIU had three players in double figures in the first period and entered the locker room at halftime with a 53-19 lead.

Anita Heller led all scorers with a career-best 20 points while Mandy Shafer added 19 and Cormisha Cotton chipped in 18.

Cotton was named the tourney’s MVP while Shafer and Ivelina Vrancheva joined her on the all-tournament team.

Stony Brook was led by Danyelle Ingram with 15 points.

It was FIU’s biggest win since a 98-35 victory over Iona on Nov. 16, 2001. The 96-point total was the most since the Golden Panthers defeated Florida Atlantic, 91-64, on Dec. 18, 2001.

With the win, FIU moves to 4-2 on the year. Stony Brook is now 1-5.

FIU returns home to face crosstown rival Miami on Sat., Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. at FIU-University Park’s Golden Panther Arena.
