MIAMI, Fla. (Dec. 17, 2002)
– The Miami-Dade County Local Mitigation Strategy managers
will have the year’s final meeting on Wed., Dec. 18, 10
a.m. at FIU-University Park.
The group of more than 300 representatives
of vital community institutions such as hospitals, utilities,
universities, and municipalities will discuss current and future
projects designed to help South Floridians reduce the potential
for damage from future hurricanes. About 100 members are expected
at this week’s meeting.
“Just in the last couple
of years this group has secured more than $400 million to help
South Florida get ready for the next ‘big one’,”
said Deputy Director of FIU’s International Hurricane Center,
Ricardo Alvarez, who also serves on the LMS group. “Other
projects are in the works that can raise that figure substantially.”
One of group’s most visible
accomplishments has been the installation of powerful pumps near
Miami International Airport that will continue pumping water out
into the ocean against the storm surge. In fact, the work of the
LMS has become the national model other communities study when
developing their own strategies.
“Through the Local Mitigation
Strategy here at FIU we have received upwards of $2 million to
secure student housing,” said Alvarez.
The LMS meeting will take place in
the Graham Center Ballroom-East at University Park. For more information
