FIU women’s basketball wins fourth straight

MIAMI, Fla. (Dec. 18, 2002) – Mandy Shafer had a game-high 18 points as the FIU women’s basketball team defeated Charlotte 71-58 on Dec. 16 at Miami-Dade Community College. It was FIU’s fourth straight victory as the Golden Panthers improved to 6-2 on the year.

The Lady Panthers – who led by as many as 23 points in the second half – shot 49 percent from the field compared to 37 percent for the 49ers.

Ivelina Vrancheva fell just short of a double-double, scoring 12 points and dishing out nine assists. Anita Heller added 11 points while Milena Tomova set a new career high with 10 points.

Jen Williams led the 49ers with 13 points while Tiffanie Hoey had eight points and seven rebounds. With the loss, Charlotte’s record fell to 5-4.

Next up for FIU is a chance to upset No. 1 Duke tonight at 7 p.m. in Durham, N.C. On Dec. 20, FIU will face UNC-Greensboro at noon.
