MIAMI (Feb. 21, 2002)
- In preparation to open the doors to students in the fall of
2002, the dean of the FIU College of Law has announced the appointments
of the founding faculty.
"We've recruited an impressive group of proven law professors,
each of whom brings different areas of expertise to the mix,"
said College of Law Dean Leonard Strickman. "I could not
be more pleased with the faculty who will teach the first class.
They have outstanding records as classroom teachers and as scholars."
Strickman added that the caliber of the faculty is an important
element in the
accreditation process for a new law school. The FIU College of
Law plans to seek provisional accreditation during the 2003-2004
school year, the earliest time such an application is permissible.
Among the founding faculty will be Thomas E. Baker and Andrew
J. McClurg, both of whom hold endowed professorships at the law
schools where they currently serve. Baker is the James Madison
Professor at the Drake University Law School. McClurg is the Nadine
H. Baum Distinguished Professor at the University of Arkansas
at Little Rock.
To lead the International and Comparative Law program, Dean Strickman
tapped Jorge Esquirol, currently a professor at the Northeastern
University School of Law. Previously, Esquirol served as Director
of Academic Affairs at the Harvard Law School Graduate Program.
Jean G. Zorn has been selected as Director
of the Legal Skills and Values Program. She comes to FIU from
the City University of New York School of Law, where she directed
the first year lawyering program for a number of years.
The other professors are Elizabeth Price Foley, Ediberto Roman,
and John F. Stack, who is already a professor of Political Science
at FIU, where he will continue to serve, while joining the College
of Law as well. Matthew C. Mirow and Aya Gruber were named Associate
and Assistant Professors, respectively.
Dean Strickman expects the College of Law to hire several more
professors in the next three years to complete the law faculty.
Most of the administrative team is already in place. Initially,
the College will admit approximately 60 students in the full-time
day program and a similar number for the part-time evening program.
