An Immigrant that Finds Hard Work is the Key to Success
Patricio Vidal, 34, a native
of Chile, is graduating with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering
from Florida International University
with a 4.0 GPA on Mond., April 28 at 3 p.m.. Vidal has managed
to keep his high academic standards while working full time as
an engineer at Beckman Coulter, Inc. in order to provide for
his family.
In 1996, Vidal moved from Venezuela
to Miami to pursue his education in Engineering. In 2002, he
became a Naturalized US citizen. “I
am very thankful for the opportunities that this country has given
my family and me,” said Vidal.
His dream of becoming an engineer
was born when Vidal placed fourth in a National Mathematics Olympic
in Caracas. Vidal obtained
his
Masters degree from Simon Bolivar University in Caracas, which
is regarded as the number one university in the country. While
at Simon Bolivar University, Vidal was working full-time but
still managed to graduate with a 5.0 GPA. During his time at
the university,
Vidal received an honorable mention for his thesis.
Currently, Vidal works for Beckman
Coulter developing software algorithms with the latest technology
to analyze blood samples
in hematology instruments. After working at Beckman for a
year, Vidal received an achievement award for his invaluable
contribution
to the company.
His Ph.D. dissertation was so innovative
and valuable to his current employer that a USA Patent application
has been
filed
and will be published in 18 months.
An International Patent will be filed after the USA Patent is published.
In addition to earning a patent, Vidal was nominated as
an outstanding
Ph.D. graduate by
Dr. Malek Adjouadi, professor of Electrical Engineering at FIU. Patricio Vidal
