Faculty Convocation Week at FIU:
An insider’s look at the future of the Academy

MIAMI, Fla. (Sept. 22, 2003) – The presidents of two of the most important universities in South Florida are in the line-up for Faculty Convocation Week at Florida International University this Fall.

University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala and Florida Atlantic University President Frank Brogan, will share their views regarding the future of higher education with the FIU Faculty.

“We are looking forward to the perspectives offered by the different approaches represented by these two guests,” said Convocation Committee Chair James Sutton. “Presidents Shalala and Brogan, together with our own President [Modesto A.] Maidique, are shaping the future of higher education in South Florida.”

President Brogan will address the faculty at the Biscayne Bay Campus at 4 p.m. on Tues. Sept. 30 in the Wolf University Center Ballrooms, 3000 N.E. 151st St, North Miami. His lecture is titled Toward the Privatization of Higher Education in Florida.

President Shalala will be the keynote speaker at the Faculty Convocation and Awards ceremony scheduled to take place at 9 a.m. on Fri. Oct. 3rd in the auditorium of the Wertheim Performing Arts Center at the University Park, 11200 S.W. 8th Street, Miami. Shalala will speak on Public and Private Higher Education: Converging or Diverging?

“These talks come at an important time in our business. Budgets are getting tighter and tighter; less that 40 percent of FIU’s operating budget comes from the State these days,” said Sutton, who is a professor of English at FIU. “As a profession we have to proceed in a real smart and creative way in order to continue our mission of educating tomorrow’s leaders. I’m sure Brogan and Shalala will have some innovative suggestions as to how we can meet these challenges.”

Convocation Week, an annual celebration of faculty accomplishments, will begin with the FIU Honors College’s Parade of Nations and States at 2p.m. on Sept. 29 followed by a ceremony in the Graham Center Ballrooms, FIU- University Park.

“I look forward to my colleagues’ views on important matters currently facing universities through out the state and the nation,” said President Maidique, who has been at the helm of FIU since 1986, longer than any other university president in Florida. “The challenge is to continue to offer affordable quality education while conducting the kind of research and intellectual endeavor that turns universities into economic engines with a real, positive impact on the community.”

FIU employs about 1,100 full-time faculty, approximately 77 percent of whom hold the highest degree in their discipline. The university offers 190 degree programs in 19 colleges and schools.
